Not everyone wants to spend big money on a video camera to capture their favorite, action sport activities, so at just under $200 the Contour ROAM2 released in October 2012 is great value when you consider it can record HD video, take still shots, is waterproof, has a rotating lens and built-in lasers to help you line up the correct angle.

Whatever you are into, fishing, surfing, cycling, skiing, kayaking, skateboarding and so on the Contour ROAM2 Waterproof Video Camera is the ideal compact, action HD camcorder to film those thrills and spills without breaking the budget.

Pros:
  • Very easy to use and great results
  • Small, waterproof and light
Cons:
  • Battery not removable/swappable

Choose from video shooting modes that include 1080p video at 30 frames per second (fps), 960p at 30 fps, and 720p at 60 or 30 fps with improved image quality. Upping the frame rate to 60 fps for recording at 720p means the Contour ROAM2 gives smoother results in action situations, which will be most of the time, yet still with the ability for recording full HD at 1080p for those quieter moments. When the situation calls for it, you can also take 5MP still images at varying time-lapse intervals up to one per second. To help achieve its compact, minimal form the Contour ROAM2 has no viewfinder and has done away with the need for an external housing to shoot underwater. It's OK for up to a depth of one meter (3.3 feet), sufficient for the inevitable splashes and dunkings when you take it kayaking or surfing. It is also extremely light, weighing in at just 5.4 ounces, so it won't feel awkward mounted on your helmet.

Simple operation is a cornerstone of this camera, courtesy of the Instant-On Record Switch on the top of the Contour ROAM2. Simply slide this locking switch into position (even with gloved fingers) to switch on and activate recording in a single action. Standby mode has been eliminated and as there is no viewfinder, there's really no need for it to be powered up when its not recording anyway, and this has the added benefit that the battery lasts longer with one charge letting you run it for around 3.5 hours. Lacking a viewfinder the Contour ROAM2 Video Camera solves the issue of being able to work out where it's pointing by utilzing two lasers located on either side of the lens which when flashed indicate where the field of view is. The 170-degree wide-angle lens can be rotated up to 270 degrees to accomodate it being mounted sideways or upside down or any angle in between depending on what you need to mount it on, say, on top of a helmet or under a skateboard.

The Contour ROAM2 comes with a bunch of accesssories including a profile mount, a rotating surface mount, a USB cable and even a 4GB microSD card so you can start recording right away.

Super compact, light, comfortable yet versatile and robust the Contour ROAM2 Waterproof Video Camera is perfect for your next extreme adventure capturing action footage while you're in the action yourself and at a great price too.
